Aricent on Thursday announced their collaboration with Broadcom to develop a carrier-grade mobile backhaul reference framework.
Aricent's intelligent switching solution (ISS) has been tested and deployed in the field on Broadcom's StrataXGS BCM56440 ethernet switch leveraging Broadcom's latest software development Kit (SDK).
ISS on Broadcom's StrataXGS BCM56450 platform will be available by the end of this year.
Aricent's ISS leverages Broadcom's StrataXGS BCM56440 and BCM56450 switch SoCs to render Layer 2 and VLAN switching, Layer 3 routing, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), MPLS-TP, provider backbone bridging (PBB), operations, administration and management (OAM), protection, timing, and synchronization features to help equipment vendors build next generation carrier grade mobile backhaul solutions, while reducing time-to-market and development costs.
Aricent's ISS is a field-proven, feature-rich software framework that offers advanced Layer 2 switching capabilities, IPv4/v6 routing, QoS, security, and management capabilities for a variety of network equipment. ISS is compliant with several Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) specifications such as MEF-9, 14, 16, 6.1 and 10.2, and it will be Carrier Ethernet 2.0 ready by Dec, 2013.
"In today's highly competitive network equipment landscape, equipment manufacturers are faced with delivering high performance products at reduced costs," said Sridhar Raju, Assistant Vice President and Wireline Business Practice Head at Aricent.
Broadcom's StrataXGS BCM56440 ethernet switch is designed to address the economic and performance challenges of service providers as they upgrade legacy mobile networks to manage the exponential growth in wireless data traffic and transition to 4G.
The device offers carriers a seamless migration path to Ethernet-class performance and advanced services in the mobile backhaul network.
"The proven commercial success of Aricent's ISS framework and Broadcom's StrataXGS Switch underscore the benefits that equipment manufacturers will receive when leveraging this joint time-to- market solution for developing mobile backhaul solutions," said Srinivasan Balaji, senior product line manager of StrataXGS/Core Switching at Broadcom.
Aricent's ISS is also available on Broadcom's chipsets for Datacenter Top of Rack switches including StrataXGS Trident (BCM56840) and Trident Plus (BCM56846), and it will be soon available on Trident II as well. ISS will also be available on Broadcom's carrier Ethernet aggregation switches including StrataXGS BCM56526 in the future.
