The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has announced its plans to construct 75 new internet exchanges in tier-2 and tier-3 towns and cities, which is a significant step towards improving internet access and connectivity in India. NIXI which is commemorating its 20th Foundation Day, at the event held by NIXI to celebrate its 20th anniversary towards continuing the Digital Transformation journey of India portrayed how it has been at the vanguard of the transformation of the nation's internet infrastructure and informed that the overall number of exchanges run by NIXI would rise to an astonishing 152 with the addition of these 75 additional exchanges. The digital economies of the regions where the exchanges are established are anticipated to benefit from this expansion, encouraging growth and innovation.

The chief guest, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, IAS, Secretary MeitY and Chairman National Internet Exchange of India, emphasised the significance of these internet exchanges in smaller communities, saying that they will improve internet speed as well as contribute to bandwidth conservation. NIXI seeks to empower neighbourhood companies, educational institutions, and individuals with seamless digital connectivity by bringing the internet closer to users in these regions.

Sharma also spoke about the administration of domain names with the ".in" and ".bharat" extensions which falls under the control of NIXI and stressed on the significance of the ".in" domain, which has already established itself as one of the top 100 ccTLDs globally. Given the size of India's population, NIXI has been given the mission of making ".in" the most popular ccTLD he mentioned.

Addressing NIXI's significant work since its formation year 2003, Alkesh Kumar Sharma stated that NIXI has played a key role in transforming India into a showcase of the country's strength in the internet ecosystem. From its original goal of creating Internet exchange points to preserve data within India, NIXI has subsequently developed to focus on creating the country's digital identity by promoting the use of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses as well as the.in domain.
