Previously called AMP India, it was
re-christened as Tyco Electronics Corp. India Ltd following AMP’s worldwide
acquisition by Tyco International in April 1999 for $11.3 billion and creation
of Tyco Electronics Corp., a subsidiary of Tyco International, after the latter
brought into its fold Siemens EC, Raychem, etc. This has been done to bring
together AMP’s leadership in the interconnect industry with forward-looking
companies like ASG, Elcon, Elo TouchSystems, HTS, M/A-COM, Madison Cable,
Raychem, and SIMEL.

Tyco’s premises cabling division
continued to consolidate its position and market share in the structured cabling
market mainly because of two reasons. While its strong training, logistics
support, bonded warehouse, and cordial channels or distribution partnerships
have been appealing on one side, on the other it is one of those few old
companies that have been increasingly investing in manufacturing in the country.
This has won the customer’s confidence and given Tyco the image of a stable
player with solutions for all categories of network. For Tyco, one of its most
effective methodologies has been its AMPACT training programme for designing,
installing, and testing LANs. Besides training and introduction of new product
lines, it added another unique strategy to its fold last year when it launched
AMP Netconnect services to provide value-added services to the customers.

Following the acquisition of Krone AG, which is the
majority stake holder in the Indian JV, by GenTek Group, worldwide Krone is
transforming itself from being an access company to data transport company. The
acquisition of Krone by GenTek has brought a new synergy between the two–the
former bringing the connectivity devices and the latter bringing the cable
through Prestolite Wire company. This deal gives Krone the portfolio to be a
complete solution provider and will help it to consolidate its base. With the
launch of its TrueNet range of structured cabling solutions, the zero-bit error
solution in the Indian market in November, it has successfully bagged two major
orders from Anand Bazaar Patrika and Tidel Park. It plans to focus in a big way
on fibre and the copper. This year, Krone wants to expand its market reach
through new alliances for channel partners, introduction of the proposed Cat6
standards solutions, and with focussed approach. In this connection, it has tied
up with ITI to jointly address the end-to-end networking solutions portfolio for
enterprises and service providers alike. Its strategy at looking at the emerging
opportunities of connectivity in call centres, ISPs, etc. could be the
differentiator.

Effective 1 August 1999, MOD-TAP, a leading structured
cabling solutions brand, was integrated with its parent company, Molex Inc. Now
falling under the Molex Premise Networks division, it has solutions designed for
maximum performance to support the most demanding applications. The company’s
growth from the structured cabling solutions largely came from the manufacturing
and Government sectors. Its main focus last year was on increasing its brand
awareness and creating its Molexperts Programme–a programme meant to train and
build team of people who could work with SIs in assessing, designing,
installing, testing, supporting, and certification of the system. It tied up
with Aditya Infotech Ltd for distribution on a national level and looking at
establishing another national level distributor. And to increase its reach it
would be looking at other sectors like banking, IT-enabled services, and
software/IT. It could also be launching it proposed Cat6 solutions.

Business Head: Deepak Mirza

Address: 79 Chamiers Road, Chennai - 600 028

Tel.: 044-432 3558

Fax: 044-434 7051

The IBDN operation of Nordx/CDT, which focusses
strictly on business premises wiring, sells products in over 35 countries. This
brand from the stable of Nordx/CDT has been strictly positioned a
standards-based, end-to-end structured cabling system for information
infrastructure. Its solutions include gigabit cabling solutions, Cat5 and above
systems, and fibre cabling systems, among others. A strong technology company
with a strong market share worldwide, the company in India has not been able to
strike the market share it deserves. The reason: Lack of direct presence to
drive the market. But it has silently made significant strides because of the
quality of its product and its distributor, Apcom. This year could see Nordx
looking at having a country manager and drive the India initiative. And there is
no reason why with a clear channel and NI strategy it cannot gain a significant
market compared to the current 3.5 percent.

nurture the network connectivity solutions that enhance not only the network’s
performance and reliability, but also the aesthetics, ergonomics, and installed
value. And has products that address both fibre-optic and copper. The products
fit a variety of applications including Cat6, Cat5E, Cat5, Cat3, multi-mode and
single-mode connectors. And its OPTI-JACK fibre optic connector and GIGA-TX

performance has been one of the key reasons for repeat orders and customer
loyalty.

The networking division of TVS Srichakra Ltd, TVSNet,
brings to the Indian networking market, R&M freenet brand of structured
cabling products. Its association with a strong technology brand has played an
important role in acceptability of the product. However, the most successful
strategy has been its thrust to tap the up-country markets. And this year could
be a year of building further brand-awareness and expansion. It plans to expand
operations in North/East, expand to another 15 secondary towns, and focus on
governments/PSUs and the financial segments. It also plans to introduce what it
claims as the next generation Cat6 solution. It will address three ranges of
cabling systems–the Classic, Star, and Vision Systems. While the Classic
System is a structured, generic building cabling solution that uses Cat5 and
Cat5E and the D transmission class, the Star variety is a generic building
cabling solution based on the new E and F transmission classes. Vision System is
for the collapsed backbone architecture. TVSNet has five authorized distributors–Interface,
Netplace, Chase, Parag, and JHT at present.

Systimax SCS (Lucent)

Fact Sheet
Business Head: Sandip Chadha

Address: 15th Floor, Dr Gopaldas Bhavan, 28 Barakhamba Road,

New Delhi — 110 001

Tel.: 011-335 3233

Fax: 011-335 1859

Systimax family of structured connectivity solutions
comprises some of the world’s most sophisticated products. And no explanation
needs to be given regarding the technology strength of its products. Lucent
Technologies pioneered Cat3, 4 and 5 UTP cabling solutions; is driving GigaSpeed
solution that can surpass Cat6 performance; and has announced LazrSpeed
solution, claimed to be the world’s most affordable 10 gigabits fibre-optic
system capable of full legacy support. Its success in India comes not as result
of its technology dominance, but because it was the first to spread the cabling
awareness in the country. Though it may not be commanding the same market share
that it enjoyed a few years back, it still enjoys the dominating mind share in
the country. Its declining market share would probably be arrested by the fact
that Lucent worldwide has spun off a new company, Avaya, to focus on enterprise
solutions. The same model could percolate to India too. Its Systimax range of
solutions will now fall under Avaya’s belt. This development would enable it
to be more focussed and be closer to the customer. And take its entire range of
enterprise solutions under a single roof to the customer.
