Segment Analysis has been an integral part of V&D100. To make it more

comprehensive, we have ranked them on the basis of products and services in each

segment. The seventh V&D100 survey analyzed seventeen segments, which fall

under the purview of communications. A preview as to how these segments

performed during the FY 2000-01.

  • Cellular

    Services




    Cellular services market was estimated at Rs 3,865.29 crore during the FY
    2000-01. It is estimated that circles accounted for 49.79 percent and metros

    accounted for 51.21 percent.

  • Basic

    Services




    The year of basic services in India. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd ranked as the
    top service provider.

  • Internet

    Services




    The industry grew by 113 percent in terms of subscriber base adding more
    than a million subscribers. VSNL was the No. 1 ISP with a subscriber base of

    6,30,900, almost double that of the previous year.

  • Paging

    Services




    Total paging services market is estimated at Rs 211 crore. DSS Mobile
    remained the No. 1 both in terms of subscriber and turnover.

  • Radio

    Trunking




    The total turnover grew 20 percent from Rs 29.75 crore in FY 1999-2000, to
    Rs 35.80 crore during FY 2000-01.

  • VSAT



    The total market in India was estimated at Rs 372.64 crore. HECL was the No.
    1 in the VSAT service providers while Hughes was the No. 1 VSAT equipment

    provider.

  • Contact

    Center




    Boom time for contact centers across India. The domestic industry alone was
    estimated at Rs 45 crore.

  • Infrastructure



    The total size in FY 2000-01 was Rs 9,369.22 crore, showing a growth of 81.8
    percent.

  • Telecom

    Cables




    The Indian telecom cable market was estimated at Rs 4,317.51 crore and
    recorded an impressive growth of 17.15 percent. Hindustan Cables, with a

    turnover of Rs 974.00 crore, topped the list of Indian cable companies.

  • Networking

    Equipment




    Not a good year for the industry, with the market growing only 53.7 percent
    in the last fiscal as opposed to 88 percent in the previous fiscal. The

    market grew to a total of Rs 3,217 crore.

  • Test

    & Measurement




    During the FY 2000-01, the total sales in the T&M market was recorded as
    Rs 370 crore, showing a sluggish growth of 16.3 percent.

  • KTS-PBX



    In terms of value, PBX market grew by 19.35 percent with a market size of Rs
    370 crore. The size of KTS market was estimated to be Rs 92.4 crore, with a

    negative growth of 34 percent.

  • Push

    Buttons and Feature Phones




    The market in India was estimated at Rs 291 crore for electronic push button
    phones and Rs 54 crore for feature phones.

  • Network

    Integration




    The market was estimated at Rs 1,675 crore. Wipro Infotech attained numero
    uno position with a growth of 110 percent followed by Datacraft India with a

    growth of 55 percent.

  • Telecom

    Software




    The market for telecom software was recorded as Rs 4,100 crore. The exports
    accounted for as much as 98.4 percent of the total telecom software sales,

    showing a growth of 90.64 percent.

  • Telecom

    Training




    Unlike the product-specific training, which dominated the Indian market,
    there was a realization of a need of trained professionals which was

    complemented by a number of industry initiatives at establishing training

    institutes.

  • Broadcast

    Equipment




    During the FY 2000-01, the broadcast equipment market, with a revenue of Rs
    5,500 crore, grew due to the massive investment plans of all major broadcasters.
