After
a dull 1998-99, when Punjab Communications Ltd had grown by just 5
percent, the company had a good time last fiscal in terms of turnover growth.
Its turnover went up by 38.8 percent and the net profit stood at Rs 8.7 crore.
This was 10 percent higher than 1998-99 profit of Rs 7.9 crore. It may be noted
that Punjab Communication’s profits had dipped by about 47 percent in the
previous year.

Punjab Communications, which started as a wholly owned
subsidiary of Electronics Corp. of Punjab in 1981 for manufacturing telecom
equipment, later on diversified into software and turnkey. The company went
public in 1994 diluting 26 percent of its equity. The company’s net worth is
now estimated to be around Rs 180 crore.
Punjab Communications has a significant installed base of telecom solutions
in India. It has a client base that covers almost every major industrial and
infrastructure segment in the country. Even though its software client base
includes a number of big names like Oracle, it is public sector companies that
are the mainstay of the company’s business. These include PSUs like ONGC, IOC,
SAIL, GAIL, NTPC and BHEL besides DoT, VSNL and MTNL. It has successfully
executed turnkey projects for Southern Railways, Western Railways, and GAIL. The
company’s manufacturing and software development facilities located near
Chandigarh is one of the bests in the country.
