Communications & Electronics Ltd (GCEL) had a dismal performance in the last
fiscal. The company registered a turnover of Rs 35 crore as compared to Rs 97.74
crore in 1998-99, showing a negative growth of —64.19 percent. It has not
closed its books on 31 March 2000 and has extended its accounting year to
September 2000 on account of poor performance. It is also waiting for Government’s
approval to go in for disinvestment.

On the transmission side, GCEL pioneered the design of pulse
code modulation (PCM) in collaboration with Telecom Research Centre of DoT. GCEL
entered into satellite communication business with the manufacture of data
collection, storage and transmission systems (DCSTS) and is a major supplier to
Indian Meteorological Organization. It has also diversified into the manufacture
of digital SCPC equipment under a technical collaboration with Hughes Network
Systems (HNS) and has indigenously developed C-Band, Extended C-Band, Up/Dn
converters for satcom applications.
GCEL also provides turnkey telecom solutions including site survey, radio
survey, system design, procurement, integration and installation. Major projects
executed by the company include the commissioning of flood forecasting system,
communication network for Sardar Sarovar canal project, point to multi-point
TDMA systems for SAIL plants and integrated voice communication set up for major
irrigation projects in the Gujarat province.
