Inspector Shankerappa is at the busiest traffic junction in
Bangalore, armed with a Blackberry and Bluetooth printer. He simply enters the
Driver's License number of the traffic violator and can view an entire case
history (if any) on the Blackberry screen. Within seconds Inspector Shankerappa
prints the challan on a Bluetooth enabled portable printer, and hands it over to
the lawbreaker. Every action is recorded in servers with the help of Airtel's
GPRS/EDGE technology.
Around 280 traffic police officers across the city have been
provided Blackberrys to combat traffic woes. It's part of the state
government's initiative to set up the Bangalore Transport Information System (BTIS)-a
Rs 350-crore project to tackle traffic woes. It has tied up with telecom
operator Bharti Airtel, map provider Mapunity Information Services, and mobile
application developer TeliBrahma Convergent Communications for the purpose.
