The

company's strength in structured cabling has placedÂ

Lucent in #8 position. Globally, Lucent has announced that its

SYSTIMAX along with its PBX business, will go to a separate

company being spun off.

A small portion of its

revenues (Rs 10 crore from total of Rs 70 crore) came from

selling some data solution to its traditional telecom accounts

and ISPs. They were primarily in DSL and digital cross connects.

The RAS products of Ascend started making inroads only at the

fag end of the year. The uninspiring performance in its RAS

products was due to the restructuring that the company went

through. The company took an unusually long time to integrate

the Ascend line of business to its main business and by the time

it was settling down, the Indian restructuring happened.

While Lucent will continue to lead in the

traditional (basic/cellular/long-distance) market, it remains to

be seen how it performs in the small carriers/ISP market. The

company to watch, however, will be its enterprise subsidiary. If

it is able to properly combine its DEFINITY and SYSTIMAX

products, it will be a major player in the LAN segment.
