India adds 5.34 mn GSM subscribers in Aug

India's GSM mobile subscribers base grew 0.88 per cent in August with the addition of over 5.34 million subscribers, showed a data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The total number of GSM subscribers in the country crossed 611.76 million in August as against 606.4 million the previous month.

Idea Cellular has alone signed over 2.3 million subscribers. Bharti Airtel added over 1.15 million subscribers in August, a growth of 0.67 per cent over the previous month, to have a total of 171.85 million subscribers.

This was followed by Vodafone Essar, which added over 1.13 million subscribers, a growth of 0.79 percent, taking its total numbers to 144.14 million. The operator has a market share of 23.56 per cent. BSNL, with 14.81 per cent market share, added 3,88,057 million subscribers, a growth of 0.43 per cent, taking its total subscriber base to 90.62 million.
