COOL Words 2000! The V&D essential guide to e-nglish

Unlike the e-world that it talks about, the whole work was rather simple. No great idea. No great effort. We just sent out 70 odd e-mails to e-aware Indians that we are familiar with (naturally, communications/IT industry professionals/users). We asked each to send five words that he/she thought were the most common parlance. And 50 of them did respond. Imagine, first response came seven minutes after we sent the mail! Compare this to more than a month that companies take to respond to our questionnaire for V&D 100!! But then, we are entering the e-millennium. Yes, 50 is a rather small sample size. But never mind, we were not trying to figure out whether 3Com was selling more or Cisco was. It was just meant to catch the mood. What people are thinking and talking about.

A bit of statistics. We received 50

responses. That makes it 250 choices. And there were 110 different choices. Some expected, some surprises. All sorts of words–from “Free” to “.com”. From “Microsoft” to “hacker”. From “Download” to “convergence”–ideas/concepts, companies, technologies, web-based jargons…just everything that is …well, cool. These are the words that you

hear in presentations, in parties, read in magazines and web sites, and discuss with your boss or colleagues. And may be with your children. Some of you

might be thinking of even making a fortune out of them. These are the

words that you cannot do without, if you are to talk to someone in the e-world. How easy are you in talking about them is your measure as an e-aware person. The proof that you are with the times. This is the e-nglish at the turn of the millennium.

We present here the top 20 words popular with our Indian technology community (there are others who are equally or more e-aware perhaps, but we sure don’t reach out to them). We also present the words that missed the top slots, and those, which performed poorer than expected, including those that did not figure in the list of 110 words at all.

Also is a collection of small write-ups about the 20 coolest words. They are not explanations (If they need explanation, how are they cool?) but kind of light reading. Call them great, funny or plain bakwas. But then, they will be bakwas write-ups, first class words!

Just read and enjoy. And no, we do not want you to refer to these words as V&D Top 20 words. But you may like to recollect–ya, I think I read it in Voice & Data listing of the coolest words.
