Alcatel-Lucent to build Colombia’s national broadband network

Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia as a major supplier for the deployment of a nationwide broadband network that will connect 753 municipalities across the country.

This network will bring high-quality TV, video, voice and high-speed data services to millions of consumers and business users throughout Colombia. ‘The National Fiber Optic Network from Compartel Program’ is a flagship project from the ministry of information technology and communication (MINTIC).

One of its goals is to increase broadband coverage from 27.2 percent to 95.5 percent by 2014. Earlier in the year, this project received the prestigious ‘Government Leadership Award 2012’ by the GSM Association (GSMA) as the best Internet access expansion project.

Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia is deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s point-to-point fiber broadband access technology and a combination of optical transport and Internet Protocol (IP) routing solutions to provide robust, high-speed video, voice and data connections to multi-tenant buildings, businesses, government offices and individual homes.

The networking infrastructure being deployed by Alcatel-Lucent for Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia will connect in 216 municipalities throughout the country. Alexandra Reyes, CEO, Azteca Comunicaciones Colombia said ‘The government of Colombia has set very aggressive targets for increasing the availability of broadband services throughout the country. We turned to Alcatel-Lucent because of its experience with the deployment of large-scale, complex broadband networks.

Our collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent – one of the broadband market leaders – will help us to ensure that this project is completed quickly and with exceptional quality.’ Osvaldo Di Campli, leader of Alcatel-Lucent activities in Latin America said â€Å“Alcatel-Lucent has been responsible for many of the largest deployments of video, voice and data services in the world, and will bring world-class expertise and unmatched experience to this project.

As importantly, we are deeply committed to helping connect underserved populations around the world, and appreciate the opportunity to engage in this ambitious effort to dramatically increase broadband penetration in Colombia.’ Alcatel-Lucent is supplying a complete turnkey system comprising broadband access, IP routing and fiber optic technology, including its 7330 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) FTTN supporting point-to-point fiber access, its industry-leading IP/MPLS solution, based on its 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR), and its 100G next-generation coherent technology, supported by the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS).
