Telecom industry's Q1 AGR increased by 2.79%, Airtel benefits most :TRAI

According to TRAI's data, Jio and Vi's quarterly AGR increased by 4.14% and 2.04% respectively on quarter to Rs 21,515.88 crore and Rs 7,356.54 crore, respectively. Whereas Airtel's quarterly AGR, or revenue from licenced services, increased by 7.1% sequentially to Rs 17,140.56 crore in the April-June period.

The telecom sector grew its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) by 2.79% in the fiscal first quarter of FY23, benefiting from the ripple effects of steep pricing increases implemented by the private bearers in last November.

Bharti Airtel led the three private network carriers in June quarter in terms of sequential AGR gains, with Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea rounding out the top three, according to the most recent operator performance data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday.

In the fiscal first quarter of FY23, the overall telecom industry's AGR altogether increased 2.79% sequentially to Rs 60,530 crore.

According to TRAI's data, Jio and Vi's quarterly AGR increased by 4.14% and 2.04% respectively on quarter to Rs 21,515.88 crore and Rs 7,356.54 crore, respectively. Whereas Airtel's quarterly AGR, or revenue from licenced services, increased by 7.1% sequentially to Rs 17,140.56 crore in the April-June period.

For the Department of Telecommunications, a greater quarterly AGR resulted in increased Licence fee and Spectrum usage charge(SUC) collection. Where SUC collection increased by 3.79% on a quarterly basis to Rs 1,999 crore, the sum from licence fees increased by 2.79% sequentially to Rs 4,844 crore. Telecom operators pay the government 3 to 4% of their SUC and 8% of their AGR in form of licence fees each year.

The number of internet users in the nation increased 1.45% sequentially to 836.86 million during the first quarter of the fiscal year, according to TRAI data. There were 808.13 million wireless internet users and 28.73 million wired internet users out of the total number of users.

The average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) from wireless services increased more than 5% quarterly to Rs 133.55, according to TRAI's report released stating the telecom industry's fiscal first quarter performance.
