For Telecommunications

Consultants India Ltd (TCIL), 1997-98 was comparatively sluggish as far as revenue

collection was concerned. In contrast, last fiscal was a year of activity, with the

company winning 23 projects. These projects had a total value of Rs 549.99 crore.

However, turnover-wise, TCIL was

able to grow only 12 percent, posting a turnover of Rs 560 crore during the last fiscal.

The Rs 42 crore net profit was a shade better than the previous year’s Rs 39.22

crore. In 1996-97, the company had posted a Rs 500 crore turnover, growing by 25 percent

compared to the turnover of Rs 401 crore in 1995-96.

The major highlights of last year

was winning contracts worth Rs 250 crore for setting up telecom networks in Ghana,

Mauritius, Madagascar, and other countries. In Ghana, TCIL will be

establishing an outside plant. The Madagascar project will be for an access network

using WILL equipment manufactured by Shyam Telecom and Crompton Greaves. In

Comoros, it will use C-DoT exchanges for the telecom network.

Also in the process of setting up

large networks in Indonesia, Mauritius, Kuwait, and Sri Lanka, TCIL is shaping out to be

an expert in implementing turnkey projects. An international player to watch out.

This telecom turnkey expert,

however, has been broadbanding into many other areas since the last few years. It is

already into software projects for telecom networks, Y2K problem, IT training, etc. The IT

division of TCIL has been in the fore-front of this extension of business. It has

won many software projects in Europe and Africa.

The company also has been in

various partnerships with national and international companies. Last year, it tied up with

British Telecom (BT) Teleconsult. The strategic alliance will offer management and

technology consultancy for new telecom businesses. The two partners are likely to bid

jointly for new contracts in technical areas like WILL and SDH. Tamilnadu

Telecommunication Ltd (TTL), its JV with Tamilnadu State Industrial Development

Corporation (TSIDC) for telecom cable manufacture, has not performed well last year

though. It experienced a negative growth of 9.43 percent, registering a turnover of Rs

41.39 crore. However, it was able to get ISO 9002 certification. This is likely to improve

its image in the export market. Also, its tie-up with Fujikura of Japan for OFTC

manufacture is likely to boost performance. TCIL BellSouth Ltd (TBL), the partnership with

BellSouth International, USA, has developed a popular billing software for telecom service

providers called Telco Administrator. For which, it already has received a contract from

Palestine Telecom (Paltel) this year. Among the other alliances it has, one is with Shyam

Telecom for Hexacomm, the cellular services licensee for Rajasthan and the North East

circles. In Rajasthan, this JV is already operating services and had over 7,000

subscribers by the end of last fiscal.

It has two offshore ventures in

the form of TCIL Saudi Co. Ltd and Orange Telecom. While Orange Telecom is a JV with

Nepostel of The Netherlands, the former is a result of an alliance with Natel of Saudi

Arabia. Both the JVs helped in bagging lucrative off-shore projects for TCIL.

That TCIL has major plans for the

future can be ascertained from its eagerness to enter the services market. It tried its

best to enter into a partnership with MTNL for offering basic telephony and cellular

services. Now this enterprising Indian PSU hasvision of being a major ISP in the

Internet era.
