Tata Teleservices commissioned 1,000th VPT in Paderu Mandal, near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, when the Sarpanch of a local village made a call from Paderu in Visakhapatnam district and spoke to Pramod Mahajan, union minister for communications & IT.
Speaking on the occasion, J.J Irani, Chairman, Tata Teleservices Ltd, said, "Commissioning of the 1000th VPT is a historic moment both for rural telephony in Andhra Pradesh & for Tata Teleservices. The company is committed to the social objective of connecting the rural population of the state with the national mainstream".
To provide VPT, Tata Teleservices has opted for a mix of technologies-- VSAT, GSM, and CDMA. But a majority of the VPTS are based on VSAT technology and has been installed in 610 remote and inaccessible villages of AP. The company has invested till date Rs 15 crore in the project and plan to invest another Rs 25
crore.
