OneWeb, a provider of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications, has launched a new fully portable user terminal (UT) that is intended to give emergency response teams and military operations that operate outside of standard terrestrial networks access to satellite connectivity. This portable terminal, known as the "FoldSat Leo Ku OW Mil terminal," according to OneWeb, is the company's first ruggedized user terminal and provides mobility for communication in changing settings.

The 11.8kg FoldSat Leo Ku OW Mil terminal, made by Inster (Oesia Group), has a low-profile, foldable antenna design. OneWeb claims that the UT is designed to operate across its Ku-Band LEO satellite constellation, enabling connectivity even in far-off places. Up to 100 metres can be covered by the Wi-Fi access point.

In addition to being portable and lightweight, the FoldSat Leo Ku OW Mil terminal provides high-speed, reliable communication. With its ability to function in challenging environmental circumstances, it is appropriate for real-time data transfer, video, and audio services.

FoldSat LEO is offered in two models: a military-grade Tactical Green model and a commercial-grade White one. When operable, it unfolds to 855mm in length, 374mm in width, and 57mm in height from its folded dimensions of 452mm, 374mm, and 114mm.

The new OneWeb terminal includes a military-grade AC/DC unit, a tripod, built-in Wi-Fi 6, and a selection of add-on accessories (travel box, batteries, custom backpack). According to OneWeb, the UT is built in accordance with MIL-STD 810H and MIL-STD 461G specifications.

OneWeb claimed that the new terminal can run while providing connectivity using a variety of external power sources, including mains, battery, solar, or car batteries. This terminal contains an external GNSS input for locations where GPS is not available, and it has download and upload speeds of up to 195 Mbps and 32 Mbps, respectively.

According to OneWeb Technologies, this portable terminal satisfies the needs of their clients, including the US military and allied warfighters, by offering flexible and robust connectivity that complies with size, weight, and power (SWaP) specifications.
