Having
entered the Indian market quite late compared to others,
Newbridge has done well by managing to get a dominant chunk of
the carrier equipment market. In India its success was mainly
due to its trusted multiplexer family of Mainstreet and ATM
switches. While its RAS won some huge ISP cases, its DSL modems
also started seeing successes as larger ISPs began rolling out
their broadband networks.
Newbridge netted a
turnover of Rs 87.5 crore registering an overall growth of 61
percent.
Switches were supplied to
a majority of the ISPs and also for a number of telecom networks
like ATM network for Army, backbone network for GAIL, ONGC, and
Tata Teleservices. There was a huge increase of 600 percent in
the RAS/RAC segment. Though there was a small drop in
multiplexer sales it still commanded the biggest market share.
In the new avatar of Alcatel's Carrier
Internetworking
Division (CID), Newbridge has a few big challenges ahead.
Alcatel has hardly any infrastructure as far as the data market
is concerned.
