Jio leads customer growth in Dec, Airtel's rise the largest in 9 months

On a net basis, the telco increased nearly 1.71 million new wireless members throughout the month, mostly due to Vi's loss.

According to TRAI data, wireless subscriber increase was observed throughout all service areas with the exception of Kerala, Haryana, West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, UP (East), UP (West), and Himachal Pradesh.

For the ninth consecutive month in December 2022, Reliance Jio, nation's no. 1 telecom provider in market share, led the wireless customer additions, mostly due to Vodafone Idea's subscriber loss. On a net basis, the telco increased nearly 1.71 million new wireless members throughout the month.

Whereas, statistics from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) shows that Bharti Airtel, the telco second in command increased 1.53 million subscribers, the most in the previous 9 months.

In constrast, Vodafone Idea has experienced a 21-month streak of subscriber losses. The telco shed 2.47 million customers in December. According to analysts, a poor network and insufficient network spending are to blame for this loss of users.

According to TRAI information, Despite the additions, the total number of mobile users in India decreased by 0.12 million in December, marking the fourth consecutive month that the number has decreased. At the end of December, there were 1.14 billion active mobile users in total.

According to TRAI data, wireless subscriber increase was observed throughout all service areas with the exception of Kerala, Haryana, West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, UP (East), UP (West), and Himachal Pradesh.

Reliance Jio increased its market share of wireless subscribers from 36.99% in November to 37.14% at the end of the month of December. In total 424.5 million wireless customers now belong to the corporation. While Bharti Airtel's market share increased to 32.16% from 32.03% and comparatively Vodafone Idea's market share decreased to 21.11% from 21.33% in November.

Jio is still in front even in the wireline market with 0.29 million additions to subscribers. Bharti Airtel came in second with 0.14 million new additions in users . At the end of December, Jio had 8.4 million wireline subscribers, compared to Airtel's 6.78 million.

To reach 390.9 million, Reliance Jio's active consumers increased by 2.97 million whereas Bharti Airtel's customer base had increased by 6 million in December reaching 364.99 million. The rise was Airtel's highest in over two years.

For the 9th consecutive month, Vodafone Idea's active subscribers deceased in December. The number of active customers for the company decreased by 0.12 million to 209.59 million in total.

The number of active mobile users in the country increased by 8.6 million in December, marking the largest increase in 10 months.
