In the upcoming 5G spectrum auctions scheduled to begin on July 26, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are anticipated to invest roughly Rs 60,000 crore and 50,000 crore, respectively. While Vodafone Idea (Vi) is expected to spend around Rs 6,000 crore, Adani Data Network that came as a surprise participant in the auction race, is anticipated to spend up to Rs 15 billion according to a report by ET.

The Adani group is expected to present fierce opposition to the two major telcos Reliance Jio and Airtel in the forthcoming 5G spectrum auction. No bidding battle was anticipated prior to Gautam Adani led-Adani group's participation since Vi lacked funding to conduct one and now both the major telecoms must make significant bids for the mid-band spectrum in the 3.3-3.67 GHz frequency in order to accomplish a strong stand.

According to various reports, Jio, Airtel, Adani Data Networks, and Vi have made earnest money deposits (EMD) of between Rs 6500-7500 crore, Rs 6000-7000 crore, Rs 2000-2500 crore, and Rs 600-700 crore respectively. EMD is a sum that businesses taking part in the spectrum auction must submit as a part of the procedure of filing application. The precise sum is unknown as it hasn't been announced yet.

The reserve price for the airwaves as it is made the telecoms unhappy and wasn't enough to satisfy them. This situation is expected to worsen and as a result of the Adani Group's aggressive defense, the deployment of 5G network in India could be too expensive for the telecom providers. The COAI has been quite vociferous about the issue even in the past. COAI is the representing industry organisation for private telecoms.

The necessity of fair competition when it comes comes to procuring 5G spectrum for captive networks has been emphasised yet again by the Cellular Operators Association of India(COAI).

“If the independent entities set up private captive networks with direct 5G spectrum allotment by DoT, it will diminish the revenue so much that there will be no viable business case left for the TSPs, and there will not remain any need for 5G Networks rollout by TSPs. It is important to understand that licensed access service providers are fully capable of providing these services most competitively and economically compared to private companies,” stated SP Kochhar, DG, COAI following Adani group's confirmation for the spectrum auction.
