Major improvements in median mobile broadband speed have been observed in India as a result of the rollout of 4G in 2016–17 and 5G in 2022. The median speed of mobile broadband in India increased from 1.30 Mbps in March 2014 to 75.80 Mbps in October 2023. Currently, 4G saturation project is enabling high-speed mobile networks to cover the entire nation. Customers across India will generally see faster mobile speeds as a result of private telecom companies' investments in rural areas. Additionally, users are now enjoying faster mobile connections thanks in large part to the rapid implementation of 5G, which is scheduled to start in 2022.

With 3.99 lakh Base Trans-receivers Stations (BTS) spread across about 738 districts, India has had the quickest rollout of 5G services globally. "The average mobile broadband speed has also increased, rising from 1.30 Mbps in March 2014 to 75.80 Mbps in October 2023," stated union minister of telecom and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written response to the Lok Sabha.

Over 100 million people in India have switched to 5G in just over a year. Ericsson predicted that 890 million 5G connections would exist in India by 2029. Data has also gotten extremely affordable.

In March 2023, the cost of a GB of data dropped from Rs 269 in 2014 to Rs 9.94. Furthermore, there are a lot more internet users today than there were nine years ago due to the market being overrun with inexpensive and accessible cellphones.

"There were 88.12 crore internet users in March 2023 as opposed to 25.15 crore in March 2014." Data prices have dropped significantly, from Rs 269 per GB in March 2014 to Rs 9.94 per GB in March 2023, according to Vaishnaw.

The minister also stated that as of March 2023, there were 25.42 lakh BTS in India, up from 6.49 lakh in March 2014.

One essential part of the infrastructure of the fifth generation (5G) mobile network is a 5G Base Transceiver Station (BTS). It is essential for facilitating wireless communication because it links user devices to the main network. A BTS’s main function is to make it easier for mobile devices, like smartphones and Internet of Things devices, to send and receive radio signals with the core network.

By the end of November 2023, India has approximately 4 million 5G BTS (base transceiver stations). The number of 5G BTS, which Reliance Jio has mostly installed around the nation, is growing quickly. The precise number of 5G BTS in the country as of November 30, 2023, was 3,97,923, according to data released by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). By October 31, 2023, a month prior, the total was at 3,85,572. Thus, in India, 12,351 5G BTS were added as of MoM.
