On all accounts, it was an
impressive performance from the Mumbai-based Global Tele-Systems Ltd (GTL). The company
recorded a growth of 22.67 percent in its turnover over the previous year. The figures
took a leap from Rs 387.30 crore in 1996-97 to Rs 475.12 crore in 1997-98.
Capitalizing on the experience
gained over the last 10 years, GTL has made its presence felt by providing innovative and
efficient solutions to the customers. To add to the advantage is the strong distribution
network which consists of 26 branches, 500 direct selling dealers, and 1,200 retailers.
The company which is into both information networks and software solutions spread its
activities into five categories: subscriber-end terminal; business communications
division; telecom infrastructure group; cellular; and software and systems integration
division.
The subscriber-end terminal
division is estimated to be contributing the main share of income. Its competitive
advantage lies in the strategic links with world leaders like Samsung, Murata Machinery,
and Maxon for the business in this division.
When it comes to the activities
of the business communications network division, the company assumes the image of a
solution provider. Riding on the strength of alliances with Nortel, Hughes Network
Systems, and Scitec, the company has won prestigious customers in the Taj Group of Hotels,
DHL, British Airways, BPCL, Singapore Airlines, MTV, Microsoft, etc. Besides undertaking
design, installation, and commissioning of integrated telecommunication networks, GTSL
offers corporates, telecom operators, and the government total project management in
setting up telecom networks.
The Telecom Infrastructure Group
has made headway by getting clients like Birla AT&T and Reliance Telecom. It offers
engineering solutions through setting up of cellular network and cell sites, backbone
digital microwave links, and optical-fibre networks. In tie-ups with Ericsson, Motorola,
and Siemens, the cellular division is marketing and selling their range of cellular
handsets and accessories across the country.
Through the dealer and retail
network, this division also sells the handsets and accessories. GTL is now involved in the
process of developing software meant for maintaining a database of cellular users and
compliant analysis.
Following the rise in demand for
messaging, work flow, and ERP, the company intends to cater to this emerging group with
the back-up of its strength and expertise in installing and maintaining India’s
largest private data network. The strategy for the current fiscal is to accelerate its
focus of being a software developer and solutions provider for E-commerce. In this
segment, the company will also implement ERP besides providing customers with corporate
messaging and intranet solutions. To its advantage, the company has skilled manpower,
world-class technology, and excellent infrastructure to implement messaging and intranet
solutions. The company is eyeing the ISP market also. If the revenues from exports during
the last fiscal are any indication, the company is going to make major strides in this
emerging market. The export figures for 1997-98 was Rs 8.77 crore. Meanwhile, the company
has also got into a contract with General Electronic Information Services (GEIS), a
division of GE, USA, for software development and executing projects in E-commerce.
At the bottom line, the company
is transforming fast. From product-centric operations to total solutions and services.
And, it runs always on a mission: customer care. |
