Things have started looking up for
the Indian software companies catering to the needs of service
providers in India. There is a significant contribution towards your
revenue from the domestic market. How has the last year been for you?
I think our performance last year has been decent. The contribution
from TCS' telecom, media and entertainment is 14.4% ( telecom: 2.2%,
media and entertainment: 2.2%) to the overall revenue of $6.3 bn in FY
2009-10. Telecom vertical has grown well in the APAC region, serving
some of the leading communication service providers and equipment
vendors in the country.
For us, most of the revenues for telecom come from ADM, assurance,
consulting, BPO and transformation engagements. Procurement of a
multi-million, multi-year deal from a US based company for managed
services in its regulatory IT and discovery areas is a highlight area.
We continuously improved the current services and launched new
services during the last fiscal like process optimization, technology
enabled solution,

frameworks and pre-integrated solutions (HOB).
Bharti Airtel has invited bids to
outsource operations worth over a billion dollars for African assets it
recently acquired from Kuwait's Zain Telecom. What are the new trends
in the industry?
Indian telecom industry is projected to become the world's second
largest telecom market by the end of 2010 with the growth triggered by
consumer's adoption of value added services, broadband and more. Indian
telecom space will give better opportunities for TCS once

services, MNP, mobile broadband drive the demand. We are thus looking
forward to the new opportunities.
How do you plan to strengthen yourself
in the Indian market, especially at a time when 3G and MNP are set to
become realities?
3G services have a potential to drive growth for the operators,
which in turn benefits IT vendors in getting business in the areas of
SI, VAS, transformation, managed services, etc. TCS will plan
innovative solutions and service offerings specifically to meet the
demands of the existing and new Indian operators.
What are the new partnerships that you
are looking forward to?
Our partnerships are not limited only to product vendors, but extend
to academic institutions, industry forums and entrepreneur networks to
foster innovation in the emerging areas. We leverage with partners to
showcase cost-effective products and solutions to the telecom vendors
and operators.
What are the new products or solutions
that the industry can expect from TCS in the year ahead?
TCS had planned few initiatives for the telecom industry which
includes expanding into new services and new engagements with clients.
We will focus on enterprise mobility, VAS services, mobile
applications. Also, we have plans to enhance our profile in
hosted/managed services and 3G/
