The auction of spectrum bands and radio waves held by telecom corporations that are due to expire in 2024 is anticipated to be initiated by the Department of Telecom (DoT) this week. The auction will take place in the March quarter of the current fiscal year, the DoT plans, according to a government source cited in a PTI article.

According to a source cited in the report, the DoT is getting ready to send a reference to TRAI about the auction of the 37 GHz band as well as the radio waves related to telecom licences that are up for renewal in 2024 within next few days.

The government reportedly made spectrum in 10 bands available during the previous auction, but no bids were submitted for the airwaves in the 600 MHz, 800 MHz, and 2300 MHz bands.

Over two-thirds of the bids were placed for the 3300 MHz and 26 GHz 5G bands, while over a quarter were placed for the 700 MHz band, indicating strong interest in that frequency. Additionally, the previous auctions held in 2016 and 2021 had failed to sell any spectrum in the 700 MHz band.

In addition, the sale of spectrum in the 600 MHz band and the frequency that went unsold in the last auction held in 2022 are probably included in the reference.

According to the article, the DoT anticipates that TRAI will soon provide auction instructions for the satellite communication spectrum, enabling its participation in the planned sale for the March quarter.

It is important to note, nevertheless, that just one satellite communication company, country's Indian space association has stated a preference for administrative allocation of spectrum over participation in the auction.

The source also said that if TRAI's recommendation is received by January, the DoT will be able to move through with the auction, guaranteeing a quick and easy procedure.
