Dr V Sridhar: By definition, convergence means all information media

on one network or applications on one network or business combined with

entertainment traffic. Broadly speaking, convergence can be defined as blurring

of dividing lines between telecom equipment, services, technology, and

regulations.

VK Mahendra: Convergence is happening, but the challenge remains, what

is there in future and how can we take it to the customers in a most profitable

and convenient way so that he can afford these services.

Sanjeev Nikore: The first trend is really related to work preferences

and mobility. I think work preferences are changing and people want to use

network from anywhere, anytime. Secondly, bandwidth requirement is changing

rapidly. New applications and multi-domain requirements are coming.

It will not be possible for the enterprise to grapple with all the technology

on its own and they would need partners, system integrators, managed service

operators who will be able to manage the network for them.

Sunil Gujral: The demand from the industry is to move towards IP,

because there are apparent benefits. And there is a demand because the service

providers or manufacturers of technologies are indicating that TDM world is

passé and therefore you better start adopting the new technologies.

JK Puri: As a user, the day I get the confidence that only one level

of communication system is good enough for my business that day would be an

ideal situation. But unfortunately, the infrastructure in this country does not

provide such availability. We have to go at three levels of communication setup.

After providing all these redundancies, we also have a fourth level at any given

time. I should be able to operate my point-of-sale location independent of the

communication system.

Kevin Daines: Coming back to the question of convergence, as an

equipment vendor it is our goal to enable our customers to save money.

Convergence is a money-saving technique. It saves operational expense, it is a

way to increase bandwidth which provides additional revenue opportunities

whether it is from single service provider or multiple service providers.

Anil Tandan: Today we have applications dedicated for some of our

corporate clients, wherein corporate field representative can punch in the sales

report.

It would be some time before you give mobility and speed at the same time.

you will be able to give higher download speed at lesser mobility requirement

while higher mobility lesser downloads.
