State-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is getting ready to roll out 4G services in Thoothukudi district soon. To utilise native 4G technology for this purpose, BSNL has joined forces with Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), and TEJAS Networks in a crucial step towards domestic technology.

TheHindu reported that BSNL would use 10 MHz spectrum to convert all 222 of the current towers in the Thoothukudi Operational Area to 4G. The hardware that is provided for the towers will have built-in 5G capabilities, which distinguishes this technological update and enables future software upgrades to effortlessly convert to 5G technology.

A further 24 additional 4G towers will be built by BSNL in the Thoothukudi Operational Area. This extension intends to improve mobile connectivity for BSNL mobile subscribers by enhancing mobile coverage across the area.

The user experience and customer satisfaction are expected to significantly increase after the planned network enhancements and expansion are finished, according to BSNL. These developments will open the door for more dependable and quick communication services, providing Thoothukudi citizens with the newest technology tools.

Existing customers who are currently using BSNL 2G/3G SIMs are urged to purchase BSNL 4G SIMs at nearby BSNL Customer Service Centres, franchisee offices, or specified mela locations in order to utilise the advanced 4G services offered by BSNL. The upgrading to 4G SIMs will be made easy and convenient for users by providing free support for the changeover.

As BSNL is on the verge of rolling out its 4G network, it is worth noting that the Union Cabinet earlier this month has approved the third revival package for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which happens to be a significant development.

This complete package, which would cost a total of Rs 89,047 crore, intends to revive BSNL and establish it as a dependable telecom service provider with a particular interest and emphasis on enhancing connectivity in rural parts of India. A notable component of the agreement is the transfer of shares to BSNL in exchange for the 4G/5G spectrum.

These relief packages drastically reduced BSNL’s overall debt from Rs 32,944 crore to Rs 22,289 crore and helped the company return to operating profitability starting in the fiscal year 2021–2022 (FY 2021–2022). In FY 2022–23, BSNL expects revenue of Rs. 20,699 crore and an operating profit of Rs. 1,599 crore.

This spectrum allotment will enable BSNL to provide 4G and 5G services nationwide, expand 4G coverage to rural and far-flung areas, offer high-speed internet access through Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, and provide services and spectrum for Captive Private Network.

According to recent reports, the Indian government is also considering The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) closure and subsequent transfer of its operations and personnel to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL)

An important step forward for India's telecom infrastructure has been made with the introduction of BSNL's homegrown 4G services in the Thoothukudi area.
