BSNL-BBNL Merger to happen this quarter

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is preparing to introduce 4G services in Tamil Nadu by June 2024 using domestic hardware and software that has been provided by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), according to a report by The Hindu. Deliveries of equipment and software are underway, with a potential delivery date of December 2023 for the completion of the infrastructure creation for the introduction of 4G services of 18 months.

By June 2024, the installation, testing, and trial phases are anticipated to be over, and the 4G service will be accessible throughout Tamil Nadu. However, the nearby state of Kerala, which contributes significantly to BSNL's earnings, is expected to get the statewide 4G service even before the deadline.

Any service issues will be detected during the trial time by BSNL, who will then fix them in designated "patch areas." To guarantee complete coverage throughout the districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanniyakumari, new signal transmission towers are being installed in addition to the ones that already exist. In order to boost the upcoming 4G service, BSNL intends to increase the number of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi districts from 526 to 50.

Since the absence of powerful batteries or diesel generators has been a major cause of signal disruptions, BSNL is providing batteries for its BTS with a capacity of 3,000 Amp-hours (Ah) to alleviate signal transmission concerns during power outages.

While BSNL plans to stop providing 3G services as soon as 4G is available, it still wants to keep providing 2G services. In order to serve users who rely on inexpensive feature phones for voice calls, BSNL is aware that a sizeable percentage of its revenue comes from 2G services.

The Union Cabinet had earlier this year approved the third revival package for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which happens to be a significant development.

This complete package, which would cost a total of Rs 89,047 crore, intends to revive BSNL and establish it as a dependable telecom service provider with a particular interest and emphasis on enhancing connectivity in rural parts of India. A notable component of the agreement is the transfer of shares to BSNL in exchange for the 4G/5G spectrum.

As part of the rehabilitation plan, BSNL is expected to see a large increase in authorised capital, going from Rs. 1,50,000 crore to Rs. 2,10,000 crore.
