The Indian telecom sector has experienced remarkable growth in customer numbers. The telecoms are already launching deals to persuade more people to start using the internet, realizing that there is still plenty of room for growth in the number of internet subscribers. India had more than 881.25 million internet subscribers at the end of the March 2023 quarter, according to the most recent TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) quarterly performance report of the telecom industry.

The number of internet subscribers increased from 865.90 million at the conclusion of the December 2023 quarter to this number. India's internet user base had a 1.77% increase in growth over the previous three months.

Only 33.94 million of the 881.25 million internet users were wired internet users; the remaining 847.331 million users were wireless internet users. Broadband and narrow-band internet subscribers are both included in TRAI's list of all internet users. There were 846.57 million broadband subscribers out of the total, and 34.69 million people used narrow-band internet. The number of broadband internet subscribers climbed by 1.73% QoQ, from 832.20 million to 846.57 million, according to figures released by the agency. The number of narrow-band internet subscribers increased by 2.94% QoQ, from 33.70 million to 34.69 million.

Average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services increased across the industry. From the quarter ending (QE) December 2022 to the quarter ending (QE) March 2023, it climbed by 0.83% to Rs 142.32. Prepaid ARPU increased from 137.71 to Rs 139.63 QoQ, while postpaid ARPU fell from Rs 182.30 to Rs 173.50 QoQ.

To maximise profits, telecom carriers must boost their postpaid services ARPU. Jio's more cost-effective offerings may have contributed to a decline in postpaid ARPU.

In an initiative for the same, Reliance Jio earlier this year Jio even increased its entry-level postpaid package now costs Rs 299 per month which was earlier priced at Rs 199. Those who purchase Jio’s new Rs 299 postpaid package receive, 100 SMS per day, along with unlimited Local, STD, and Roaming calls with 30 GB of high-speed internet. Subscribers to Jio who receive invites may take advantage of the Welcome Offer with Unlimited 5G data. Internal app features including JioTV, Jio cinema, Jio security, and Jio cloud are included with the subscription.
